Like a fleeting honey bee, Brownsville firefighter Rigo Bocanegra is teasing the curious on what poistion he is contemplating on running for.
Will it be Cameron County Precinct 2 commissioner position (as some are suggesting) now occupied by Alex Dominguez, the county clerk position now held by Sylvia Garza-Perez, a Brownsville Independent School District position in 2018, or the U.S. presidency after Trump finishes his term?
All possibilities, apparently, are open to the baby-blue-eyed candidate now supported to the hilt by "Team Saenz," the political cadre that is feeling its oats after it elected Estela Chavez-Vasquez to a county court-at-law judgeship over vastly more qualified candidates the last time around.
But Bocanegra (or Rigo as his bods call him) should take note that The Saenz brothers sheen (Cameron County DA Luis and his bro Mario) has worn off considerably after the defeat of the prosecution in the Marco Antonio Gonzalez case where the defendant 1) got a mistrial, 2) was acquitted of murder, and 3) got five years on nine counts of aggravated assault of law enforcement officers during a seven-hour standoff where he shot it out with them.
Add the most recent thrashing the DA's Office got at the hands of defense attorney Eddie Lucio (no relation to the senator of representative, though they wish there was) in the corruption case of Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre where he was acquitted of 23 charges by a jury in Corpus Christi, and the luster seems to be wearing thin.
So, apparently, is the electorate's tolerance toward "Team Saenz."
For the past two or three months. Rigo has been making noises about running for a position in "Cameron County" but stopping short of saying just what position it is he wants. He says his "exploratory committee" will tell him when and where he will throw in his hat when and if he decides.
We all wait with bated breath. Rigo came in third in the race in the last BISD elections that was won by Dr. Sylvia Atkinson. That was a small district, relatively speaking compared to the races countywide. Is he sure he wants to take a bite off that apple?
