The filing period for a place on the ballot for three openings on the board of the Brownsville Independent School District for the November elections started on July 23 and closes on August 20. Already, there are eight candidates for the three positions open.
Positions 1, 2, and 4 will be in play. Position 1 is currently held by Cesar Lopez, 2 is held by Carlos Elizondo, and 4 is by Joe A. Rodriguez.
So far, of the three incumbents, only Rodriguez has indicated he will be running for his position again. The others are Erasmo Castro, Mark Anthony Cortez, Timmy Ramirez, Randy Gonzales, Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton, Joe Valdez Jr. Otis Powers filed a campaign finance report but has not indicated whether he is running in the 2018 elections.
Although candidates aren't required to say what place they're running for until the last day of the filing deadline, two – Timmy Ramirez and Jose Valdez Jr. – have stated they are seeking Lopez's seat. One – Roca Tipton – has stated she is interested in Rodriguez's seat. Others have left their options open.
