It started out as a word fight between two teens on social media, some witnesses told police.

The word war escalated and grew heated and both teens decided to meet at Oliveira Park in front of Pace High School and duke it and defend their offended honor.

Unfortunately, one of them came with a gun and the other did not. The guy with the gun won.

The shooting occurred at 5:19 p.m. on the 100 block of El Paso Road in Brownsville, according to a statement from investigator and Public Information Officer Jose A. Laredo.

Now we have two grieving families. One is grieving the senseless death of their teenage son. The other is mourning the fact that they may lose their son to a dark cell in the state penitentiary, perhaps never to emerge, and if he does, to emerge to a lost life that was left like the spent cartridge in the grass of the park

“An unknown subject shot the victim and the suspect fled the scene. The victim was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. This case is currently under investigation,” said Laredo.

That was the second shooting in Brownsville in a span of less than 12 hours.

Police responded to the first incident around 9:15 a.m. Friday when two men, reportedly from Hidalgo County invaded a home on the 2800 block of Frankfurt Street at approximately.

Neighbors said that the men had grabbed an elderly woman and had forced her into a car when they were shot by someone from inside the house. Home invasions, common occurrences among drug dealers in Hidalgo and Starr County, are rare in Brownsville and some of the people in the neighborhood are wondering if this signals a spillover from there.

Unconfirmed reports from sources close to the investigation say one of the men may have been the brother of a female Hidalgo County Asst. D.A. Inquiries to Hidalgo County officials were not answered.
