It was 1944 and the United States was still engaged in the War to Make the World Safe for Democracy. The War to End All Wars (WWI) was thing of the past.
On the home front in South Texas, during the war years, patriotism was well defined as Americans did what they could to help in the war effort.
Brownsville High School saw many of their peers marching in tandem to join the conflict.
The Senior Class dedicated the yearbook, the Palmetto, to those students. It was with great pride
that we seniors, upheld the "Good Neighbor Policy" in this time of uncertainty.
In those days, Brownsville schools were considered some of the best in the state and its sports teams put bigger districts to shame. The came the war...
Still, it wasn't all war that occupied the minds of high school students then, as other things occupy their minds now besides the COVID-19 crisis. In that year, Juanita Fernandez (below), was elected most beautiful.

In the years that followed, BHS students returned to their old ways and frolicked in the city with their hot cars and dates. Compared to what is going on today, those were the good old days.
