Brownsville Independent School District Superintendent Dr. René Gutiérrez announced today that Spring Break will be extended for one more week and that instead of all BISD campuses and offices and regular district operations resuming on Monday, March 23, 202, they will resume Monday, March 30.

All other personnel, including teachers, administrators and support staff, would report to work as scheduled on March 23. The district said the situation would be re-evaluated next Wednesday to determine when students would return.

Gutierrez said the district administration's change were made in accordance to President Donald Trump's guidelines asking that U.S. resident to remain at home for the next 15 days to blunt the transmission of the COVID-19.

BISD trustee Phil Cowen said the decision was made by the administration and that he fully supported the move.

"That's why we have him there," Cowen said.

He said that moves were being contemplated now on how to provide breakfast, noon and evening meals to the majority of its students. He said the district's bus drivers could probably deliver the meals to the students, if need be,

He said the district is also evaluating how it would provide classes to students online in a district where many students do not have high-speed internet access. He said the district is having ongoing talks with Spectrum to see if it could use its system to provide online classes across the city.

"The trick now is not how to get the students out of the schools, it's how we're going to get them back in and prevent infection going back to the students' homes. That's why we have our administrators and we let them do their job."
