With only about two and a half months to go before the elections at the port of Brownsville, Place 3 candidate Julio Graña is firing the first shot across the bow of his opponent incumbent John Reed.

In direct and pointed criticism of the incumbent for remaining silent on the COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis, Graña, makes no bones about his opinion that the chairman of the Brownsville Navigation District is out of touch with the people in the district.

Graña in blunt about the "clubby" nature of the board, out of touch with the electorate, and insulated from the district's taxpayers and residents.

He states on his Face book page:
"It is not a matter of who gets elected, it is about caring for our region.

Arguably, for years we have seen the distance between the Port's leadership and the citizens of our great community. Some feel as though they make whatever decisions they desire, without us knowing about it.

Take this, for example:
Although leadership at the City of Brownsville, Cameron County, and BISD have stated their measures and constant monitoring of the COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis, where is the Port Of Brownsville? Are we taking the necessary precautions to control this Virus?

We have heard from our Mayor, our County Judge, and Superintendent, where is our Port Chairman?

The Federal Government has called this an Emergency and even restricted travel from Europe and Asia, among many other countries.

Are we screening cargo at the port? Is there is a screening process for individuals arriving with these ships? If there is a risk for our region, shouldn't the Port of Brownsville be one of our primary concerns?

It is very likely that after this post, they will start informing us about the measures they are taking, but, in my opinion, this is one of the many things I consider "Lack of Leadership" from our Port Chairman.

When an elected official runs unopposed for 16 years, things are taken for granted, and you simply stop caring for the community you represent.                                                                                                                          (Click to enlarge.)
When people are silent in a crisis, that is NOT leadership."

Will notices suddenly appear from the port to the residents concerns? We searched the port's website and so far, nothing about the port's preparations - if any - have appeared. Will we see something from the Golden Ditch's perennial chairman?

Let the games begin!
