Commish Galonsky clarifies 'misleading' news  article on cutting of sabal palms

Perhaps some of you read an article on the Rio Grande Guardian website, written by Stefanie Herweck, claiming that the U.S. International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) illegally cut down and reduced to mulch sabal palm trees, Texas ebony trees and mesquite trees growing along the river near the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. Yesterday, I contacted a friend who works at the Sabal Palm Sanctuary and he assured me that the article is not entirely correct.
According to him: "The sabal palm forest remains untouched. The clearing occurred on the east side of the property along the river. Most of the sabal palm trees in the clearing zone were left standing. However, the IBWC did clear more than their jurisdiction allows, which is why Texas Audubon is now pursuing reparation from IBWC." Ultimately, the parties involved are hoping to have a positive outcome.
Today, other sources have also confirmed that the article is misleading. Please beware of what you read online and verify that the information provided is accurate.
