(Ed.'s Note: It took the better part of a year, but the damaged bridge crossing Rancho Viejo resaca on Old Port Isabel finally opened today. Rene Capistran's Noble Texas Builders officially handed over the span to Cameron County Precinct 2 commissioner Joey Lopez.
The work was a joint effort by Cameron County Public Works crews who started the prep work for the construction of the new bridge..
The bridge was closed for more than half a year after is sustained extensive guardrail damage that made crossing it dangerous to the public.
The thoroughfare is used by many of the neighborhoods in the area and is used to go from FM 802 to FM 511. When the bridge was closed it forced local residents and motorists heading north to use an alternate route around the Buena Vista Cemetery and then on to FM 511.
Public Works crews were notified that Noble Texas Builders were chosen to perform the construction of a n entirely new span after an emergency was declared by the commissioners court.
The start of the project was be delayed a bit longer since a fiber optic cable runs under it and had to be rerouted before work could proceed.)
