(Ed.'s Note: Today is the day for the annual HEB Feast of Sharing public relations meal served to thousands of Brownsville residents. It is usually a public relations success, but coming in the wake of their abandonment of downtown Brownsville store where it has served as an anchor for the better part of 50 years, one meal in one day is at most a bittersweet event.
City officials say that the excuse that some HEB managers made that historical district restrictions hindered the store from expanding are bogus because HEB never applied for the waivers or permits which could have allowed them to enlarge their operations. After today's public relations fest, and after the turkey indigestion, the downtown will still lack a grocery store, traffic will slow down, and HEB will continue making money in other parts of the city.
Meanwhile, elderly residents without transportation have to find a way to get their groceries and other domestic needs.)
