On July 5, a Friday, Michael A. Vargas, president of the San Benito Independent School Board, was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated in neighboring Harlingen.

Almost two moths later - on September 2 - Brownsville Independent School Board member Erasmo Castro Jr. was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated on Morrison Road at about 1:34 a.m on Labor Day.

A police report indicated that Vargas, 32, was found “sleeping behind the wheel of a black passenger vehicle,” around 2 a.m. Friday July 5. Apparently, someone called the police in reference to an alleged intoxicated driver.

Later, a number of San Benito ISD parents demanded that he be removed from the board. Vargas and the board refused and he remains in his position.

In the case of Castro at the BISD, it is doubtful that he will either step down or be asked to resign and he will probably remain at his position while his case works its way through the judicial system.

Vargas retained former Cameron County Pct. 2 commissioner Dan Sanchez as his attorney. Who will Castro hire as his defense attorney? It can't be Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz even though he endorsed his BISD candidacy, a conflict if there ever was one.

As usual, we get our share of snide comments in  cases like this that involve public officials. It comes, we guess, with the territory.

We won't repeat them all, but we did find one that is not as cruel as many of the ones we rejected, and is also quite clever.

This one said: "If you'll notice, both Vargas and Castro prefer to wear bow ties in their formal attire. Someone should tell them to avoid them or think twice before tying one on."
