A rapidly-spreading fire in full bloom greeted firefighters of the Brownsville Fife Department when they answered a call to the blaze between the 9th and 10th on E. Monroe Street.

Firefighters say that the fire spread quickly and gutted the brick house and then jumped to the house next door, which sustained extensive damage to the upper floor. They say that no one was hurt or killed because they were not home at the time.

The neighbors were looking for four kittens that lived with one of the tenants of the brick house. The house was divided into four apartments. The firefighters battled the fearsome blaze with outside weather rising the heat index in the 110-plus degree range. Some of the tenants were not time when the fire was detected and reported at about 4:30 p.m. so they will get a rude surprise upon their arrival tonight.
