(Ed.'s Note: The Brownsville Police Dept. pulled out all the stops to provide protection to the U.S. Congressional delegation investigating voting rights and commemorating Black History Month. After listening to a presentation by Dr. Tony Zavaleta on the disgraceful treatment of the Buffalo Soldiers, they toured downtown with Dr. Anthony Knopp who pointed out places associated with the Brownsville Raid that led to the dishonorable discharge of the black unit.
A ceremony honoring the contributions of African-Americans in Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley followed Monday evening at the Cameron County Commissioner Court at the Dancy Building. Above, the BPD SWAT unit stands guard as the recognition ceremony was being held across the street.)
