With Tuesday's deadline to withdraw as candidates from the November 6 Brownsville Independent School Board election looming, rumors are swirling that board president Cesar Lopez and vice president Carlos Elizondo will join former BISD trustee Luci Longoria in signing to be out of contention.

Neither candidate has confirmed or denied the rumors, but close associates indicate there might be some truth to what up to now are merely rumors.

Longoria formally filed her withdrawal at 2:25 p.m. today. As a result, her name will not appear on the November ballot. With her pulling out of the race, it left three candidates left for the Position 2 seat now held by Carlos Elizondo, namely, Elizondo, Erasmo Castro and Herman Otis Powers.

If the rumors of Eizondo's withdrawals  confirmed, it will leave only Castro and Powers in the fray.

And if Lopez pulls out of Position 1, it would narrow the field to (by their place on the ballot), 1. Caty Presas-Garcia,  2. Jose Valdez, 3. Drue Brown, 4. Mark Anthony Cortez, and 5. Timmy Ramirez.

The other seat in contention will remain the same:
Position 4 now held by Joe Rodriguez

1. Randy Gonzalez
2. Joe Rodriguez
3. Dr. Prisci Roca Tipton
4. Jorge Valdez

Elizondo was bound to address questions on the two indictments and 11 charges he is now facing, an issue that he has to which he needs to dedicate his entire attention if he hopes to remain a free man. And Lopez, who tried to leave the president's post and hand it off to Elizondo before cooler heads persuaded him to remain and not expose the district to the shame and ridicule of having a president with 11 felony counts hanging over his head.

At the time, he said he wanted to dedicate his time to his young children.
Will the rumors prove true? We have until Tuesday at 5 p.m. to find out.
