THE OLIVEIRA-SANCHEZ SAGA: ONE RIOT, ONE RANGER

"Rocky had come, equipped with a gun
To shoot off the legs of his rival
His rival it seems, had broken his dreams
By stealing the girl of his fancy..."

By now the whole city knows about the running novela and the angst between Capt. Bob and defeated incumbent Texas District 37 State Rep. Rene Oliveira.

Without going into the sordid details, there was an episode in the soap opera (sit-com?) before the defeated state rep lost to Cameron County Pct. 2 Commissioner Alex Dominguez where Bob's better half fled the Sanchez homestead and took up with Rene in the neighboring spread.

That, alas, also came to an end shortly after Oliveira was nailed by Brownsville's finest for DWI. His blood test for alcohol came back almost twice the legal limit. But whether there were any other substances (controlled, or otherwise) in the blood, we'll have to wait to find out because Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz is exercising his prosecutorial discretion and is asking that the Texas Attorney General's Office allow him to withhold the results from the public because they are part of an on-going investigation.

Be that as it may, now we understand that a text message from Oliveira to the former Mrs. Sanchez and some of the Sanchez kids was intercepted by Capt. Bob who was none too pleased at the continuing effort by the state rep to continue communicating with his sweetie and the chillen.

Bob, if we are to believe his version, texted Rene in no uncertain terms (he said) to the effect that: "I'm warning you. Let this be the first and last time that you try to get in touch with her or with the kids."

While this may be the expected response from a jealous mate, neither Sanchez nor the missus were expecting a call from a Texas Ranger investigating what a state representative thought were threats against his considerable corporal integrity.

Well, that's exactly what happened.

It seems that Los Rinches are in charge of protecting the safety of state legislators and they were alerted to a perceived threat. Now, on previous occasions (as when he tried to get on a plane with a gun) Oliveira has been known to pack a .38-caliber piece of heat.

On the other hand, Sanchez claims that the only weapon in his dad's crib is a long gun belonging to his old man. We hope it doesn't get to these two bad hombres facing each other in the middle of Jacaranda Street at high noon. It would be like Matt Dillon facing off with the Rifleman.

Somehow, we seriously doubt it, since neither of them are known to get out of bed before 2 or 3 p.m. By that time the Rinches will know that it was just a false alarm. There was no riot, so there's no need for the Ranger.
