Special to El Rrun-Rrun
Oquin, who ran for the board of the Brownsville Independent School District before, will replace Rafael Vela whose four-year term expires June 30. The item to replace Vela was placed on the agenda for Tuesday's City of Brownsville Commission meeting by commissioners Jessica Tetreau and Cesar de Leon.
Anna Oquin, a local business woman who runs a number of successful McDonald's franchises in the city, has been appointed as a member of the Brownsville Public Utility Board.

There were no other nominations made by other commissioners at the meeting.
Oquin, a frequent speaker at BISD during the public comment public period, often criticizes the district board and administration for lack of oversight on fiscal matters and for lack of accountability. Her nomination is seen as further evidence that Mayor Tony Martinez is losing his grip on the BPUB. Martinez, as mayor, is an ex-oficio member of the board.
According to past news stories, Anna and her husband Lonnie moved to Brownsville in 2002 to purchase three McDonalds restaurants and now own five. They both started working at a McDonalds in Houston after high school and married in 1996.
They started with three restaurants: one on Southmost Boulevard, one at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and the one on South Frontage near the zoo.
