OLIVEIRA: " HEY DUMMIES, I'M IN LNGs INTERESTS' POCKET."

Are you surprised that in his latest slick political ad "For Dummies" where District 37 State Rep. Rene Oliveira asks the voters that "instead of talking about personal matters" they should focus on  issues "that affect your wallet?"

Yeah, let's.

Wouldn't you want that if you had just been arrested for DWI after you left your pachanga, slammed into the back of a woman's car, left the scene of the accident before police arrived, and then refused to take a breath alcohol test or sobriety test and had to be held up by a cop so he wouldn't fall on his face?

Further, news media requests for the blood test performed on Oliveira based on a judge's warrant to determine his alcohol-blood level content or detect other drugs he might have ingested has not been released and police are fighting open records requests for police-car dashcam and officers' body cams tapes to delay their release until the election is over by asking for a Texas Attorney General's opinion.

Instead Oliveria, a yellow-dog Democrat, reaches into the Trump bag of tricks seeking to divert voters attention from his "personal matters" to attack opponent Cameron County Pct. 2 Commissioner Alex Dominguez over his vote for $337 million abatements over 16 years on a $15.7 billion liquified natural gas terminal once it's at full build.

Will he reject the endorsement of Port Commissioner John Wood – who came a beggin' for the LNG abatements before the county commissioners – and of dinosaur city commissioner Ernesto de Leon?  What will Wood be back begging for next, tax abatements for Big River Steel?

But is Oliveria's mind still muddled and in a fog and he forget that it was his letter of support (as well as Eddie Lucio III's) that brought the plants to the Port of Brownsville to begin with? By the time the issue reached the county in October 2017, both the state and the port commissioners had given them their approval years before. It was a done deal.

Ignoring that the plants have drawn the opposition from some municipal entities, including the South Padre Island city council,  the Point Isabel Independent School District, the Laguna Madre Water District, the Port Isabel city commission, and the Laguna Vista town council, he went on the record to support them coming here.

"State Rep. Rene O. Oliveira and state Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr.–  both Brownsville Democrats – already submitted letters of support for the Annova LNG project to the FERC.

“As a longtime legislator from the Brownsville area, I can assure you that the project has strong support from the local community and its leaders,” wrote Oliveira, chairman for the House committee on business and industry."

He said nothing about the fact that the abatements would be offset by the county collecting up to $166 million over 13 years in addition to 300 permanent jobs, 35 percent of which must consist of Cameron County hires (the LNGs wanted to give only 20 percent local, but Dominguez insisted on 35), and more than 5,000 construction jobs.

And, unlike his cute ad, he mentioned nothing about safety or the environment in his letter of glowing support for the LNG terminals.

Is he trying to woo Anti-LNG people without telling them how much money he gets from the energy lobby? Issues that affect his wallet?

Transparent Texas tells the sordid story. Excelon, Annova's parent company, has given him $10,000 since 2015 (Click on graphic to enlarge).

In fact, oil and gas interests love Rene. FollowTheMoney (right)shows they have been very generous to their "fighter" to the tune of almost $250,000.

And he wants to make sure that they aren't just around for a mere 30 years. He went "fighting" for them again with his bill to allow the Port of Brownsville to lengthen the terms of their leases to 50 years in 2015. That's when the contributions started. (See graphic, click to enlarge.)

Yeah, we can see why Oliveira would want to divert voters' attention away from his "personal" matters and instead ridicule his opponent over an issue from which he has profited handsomely.

Wouldn't you?

But he's right. If we fall for the bait, we're all "Dummies" to him.
