Cameron County residents in need of warm clothing can find coats, socks and other donated items at the El Centro Cultural in Cameron Park.

Commissioner Alex Dominguez launched the coat drive this week in response to freezing weather over New Year’s Day. Warming temperatures don’t eliminate residents’ need for warm clothing just yet, he said, particularly in low-income areas like Cameron Park.

“If our neighbors are willing to donate, I’m sure (residents) will be willing to take what they have to keep their kids warm,” he said, adding the donations are open to anyone in the Brownsville area.

Center Director Martha Cramer said about 60 families have stopped by the center for coats, socks and knitted hats. Coats for children and teens are the most in-demand, she added, and center will distribute items as long as donations are brought in.

Planchado Express #2 will dry clean coats at a discounted rate of $4 for anyone who intends to donate to the drive, Precinct 2 Administrative Assistant Zeke Silva said. The store is located at 216 Paredes Line Road, Suite 8, and customers must tell the staff the items are for Dominguez’s coat drive to get the discount.

For more information or to arrange large donations, call Lavinia Long at (956) 983-5091.
